CM&BHC will host a showcase as part of an event series planned by the newly formed USC Center for Interactive Media Technologies in Healthcare (CIMTH). Participants can sign up for multiple sessions of hands-on demos and watch a live presentation about the center. CIMTH’s mission is to advance the art, science and technology of interactive media in healthcare, to empower healthy behavior, to improve healthcare provision for all by promoting pro-active collaborative participation in a healthy lifestyle, and to encourage, facilitate and promote cross-disciplinary research and developmental collaborations.
The event is open to any USC any Faculty, Staff and Students and community affiliates.

1. TRY: Emerging Technologies
SESSION A @ 1:30-2:15pm (up to 12 people)

David Turpin and Fotos Frangoudes will demo a mixed reality prototyping platform for rehabilitation games, which are a prelude to Skyfarer, a body-based game for shoulder pain treatment and prevention designed for wheelchair-confined individuals aging with spinal cord injury. This research is sponsored by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) through collaboration with USC OPTT-RERC. Skyfarer will be evaluated in an intervention study in early 2013 at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center.
Vangelis Lympouridis will demo an electromyography-based prototyping platform for prosthetic hand training games for transradial amputees. This research is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through a collaboration with Infinite Biomedical Technologies. We will be announcing a workshop and competition for students to design and develop games for this system, which will be tested by amputees at Medstar National Rehabilitation Center.
Prof. Perry Hoberman will demo FOV2GO, a mobile software and hardware virtual reality prototyping platform developed at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies MxR Lab. CM&BHC will be using the technology as part of Baby Storyteller, a babybook app and caregiver education game we are developing for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Trauma Program. This low-cost mobile immersive platform can be used to develop content for patient and provider education at home and at clinical settings.
2. WATCH/LISTEN: Games, Virtual Reality and the (continuing) Pursuit of Happiness

Marientina Gotsis will present a sequel to a 2009 paper, which will outline the inspiration, collaboration and outcomes that have led to the projects she and her CM&BHC-affiliated teams have been working on for almost five years. You will find out about the history behind many projects, including successes and failures and the evolution of a theory and practice-based methodology for designing experiences aimed at improving and maintaining human health.

3. PLAY: Emerging Game System Prototypes

Yasaman Hashemian and Nick Farmer will moderate play sessions of board game prototypes designed as prequels to Virtual Sprouts, multiplatform gardening and cooking games for children in 3rd through 5th grade. Virtual Sprouts will be evaluated as part of an obesity prevention and science education intervention in Los Angeles, sponsored by an NIH Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) and developed by the Keck School of Medicine, School of Cinematic Arts, Viterbi School of Engineering, Rossier School of Education and Institute for Creative Technologies. Our community partners include the USC Family of Schools, California Science Center and COPE Health Solutions.
Marientina Gotsis will moderate play sessions of the board game prototype The Resilient Brain, (a.k.a. Brain Architecture), which is used to teach how brain development is affected by genes, environment and behavior. This game has been played by over 300 people in settings such as Early Headstart teacher workshops, National Science Teacher’s Association workshops, Alberta Family Wellness Initiative events and students at the University of Southern California. The development was sponsored by the Norlien Foundation in collaboration with the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University and the USC Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute. The game was developed together with Brain Hero.
